Snow Day!!

One of the perks about teaching is the snow day!  So far this week, between MLK Jr. Day and a snow day I've only worked 2 real days!  The only bummer in all of this--Mr. H is not so lucky.  Last year during my snow days we went sledding and played outside in the beautiful white mess.  This year however he has had to rise with the alarm clock, put on work clothes, and brave the elements.  My poor hubby  :(

As a few of your have already learned through alternate communication, we arrived home yesterday evening to find a rooster outside our front door.  Yep--a chicken!  We really don't live in the country and this little guy was just hanging out.  We suspect he may have chosen the little alcove to get out of the hash wind.  Either way, he's a rooster--on our front doormat!

Mr. H had the bright idea to try to get close to him (why I have no idea!) and he flew onto our roof.  At this, Mr. H starts saying repeatedly, "honey, there's a chicken on our roof!!"  "There is a chicken on our roof!  What do we do?!?!!"  It was pretty funny and we decided to just leave him there and go inside.  What else we were going to do with a chicken on our roof?

This morning, after I received the wonderful news that I got to stay home and not-so-wonderful news that the roads were clear enough to allow Mr. H to get to work, we found these...
...rooster tracks through the fresh snow of our flower bed.
At least the little guy made it through the harshly cold night alive!

The next notable occurrence of the day--drum role please--I finished the blanket!

Yes, the two-years-in-the-making blanket.  And oh my is it soft and cozy!  The pattern involves many tightly woven hexagons, so this gives the blanket almost no air holes and makes it incredibly warm.  Success!!

Here is a larger view, draped over a chair, so you can see more of what the pattern looks like.

I'm so happy it's done!  I feel like I should start a new project (I'm one of those people that always needs at least one project going) but I have no idea what I want to do.  It's been so long since I started a new project  :)  How exciting!

And one final photo to leave you with on this wonderful snow day.  Sully, hiding out in his hut.
Happy Snow Day to All!!!

Funny story about the rooster on your roof. Matthew probably remembers this, but in Holland, in a village near where we lived, there were a number of chickens living in the wild. I drove by on my bicycle late one evening, and I heard a rooster crowing from up above! I stopped and looked up, and the chickens were roosting far up in the trees! Up to that point, I never realized chickens could fly that well...
